You can find instructions for installing drivers in the Windows Help file. Sometimes, there is no installer because you have to install your driver through the Windows “Add a device” function. After extracting the files to a disk or special directory, locate the installer, usually called “setup.exe” or “install.exe”, and then click on it to start the installation. Note that these files will only be self-extracting if they are run from Windows. You can also extract or move these files to a floppy disk. Click on the file to automatically extract the software and the associated files in your new folder. Create a new folder and move the file to it. When prompted, set the destination on your desk. In most cases, the Windows drivers found here are “self-extracting” (.exe) files. This allows you to go back in time to a stable point in case you load something that is not compatible with your operating system. Likewise, as with any software installation, be sure to create a restore point BEFORE installing any software. NOTE: If you have inadvertently loaded the software, UNPLUG the software BEFORE installing the new driver. Windows 8 will update the driver and your A6200 will be usable. Point to the folder you created (or where you have located the downloaded files) and update the driver. Now that you have installed the A6200, open the Windows Device Manager, select the A6200 and select “Update Driver”. This cable and frame work very well and are an interesting addition. This is a large device and can cover more than one USB port! To do this, NetGear provided an extension cable and support. You will find a set of instructions and the necessary files to install the A6200 on your computer. Once you have finished, connect the A6200 to your computer. Follow the download instructions and be sure to unzip the file to an easily accessible location (for example, on your desktop: I created one in my desktop, call the A6200 where I downloaded and unzipped the file).
For Windows 8, DO NOT USE THE DISK! Instead, go to the NetGear website and download the beta version of the Windows 8 software. If you do not want the application, install only the standalone software.
This software is NOT necessary for the adapter to work. There is a software application also called A6200 Genie that facilitates control of connections. During a week of testing this device with my Windows 7 laptop, I found that the device was VERY stable and allowed data transfers 30% faster than my old N-rated adapter. Be sure to load the FIRST software, then connect the A6200 adapter when prompted. Let me give you my results with each one: For Windows 7, follow the package instructions. I needed this adapter to support computers with Windows 7 and Windows 8. Since I upgraded my router, I wanted to take advantage of this additional speed and decided to buy this adapter. If you have one of the new AC routers, you should also buy a WIFI AC adapter to take advantage of the additional speed of the 5 GHz band provided by the new standard.
